2021 STRATEGIES

5 PLACES TO RAISE THE BAR

Now that 2020 is behind us, where are the most important places to put your energy in
the coming year? We’ve heard from many internal communications and HR professionals
that much of what they’d planned for last year was derailed by the pandemic, as they
dealt with the new realities their companies faced. The new year may be the time to go
back and address some of those initiatives, but we also see some new issues surfacing that
might deserve a place on your list of priorities.

2021 Strategies 01

ENGAGING REMOTE EMPLOYEES

Remember back in March when we thought we’d have everyone
working from home for just a few weeks? We’re creeping up
on a full year of remote work, and even when the pandemic is
behind us, many companies will never bring everyone back to the
office five days a week. You might want to make engaging remote
employees (in ways more meaningful than Zoom happy hours) a
strategic priority this year.

2021 Strategies 02

DIVERSITY & INCLUSION

It’s no longer enough for companies to say that they’re committed
to inclusion and diversity – or even to express public support
for marginalized groups and social issues. Employees are now
eager to see demonstrable action. Will your current D&I strategies
achieve measurable results that will continue to grow over time?
This will be an ongoing issue, not just a box to check.

2021 Strategies 03

MENTAL HEALTH

Remote employees who live alone may be grappling with isolation
and depression. Parents with young children at home might be
barely holding it together. And couples who are now together 24/7
could be feeling the strain in the relationship. This year it will be
important to promote mental and emotional self-care, as well as
any counseling resources your company may provide.

2021 Strategies 04

INTRANET CONTENT

The pandemic has pushed employees to the intranet more than
ever, since those working remotely can no longer yell across to
the next cubicle. This could be just the catalyst your intranet needs
to become the communications Main Street of your company,
but only if employees find interesting news and cultural items
when they go there. Maybe this is the year to calendarize a steady
stream of fresh, relevant content.

2021 Strategies 05

CHANNEL MIX

The channels that worked when everyone was in the office may
not be as effective now that so many are working remotely. For
instance, if you used to have digital signage in breakrooms or
other public areas of office buildings, you might try moving that
content to a carousel on the intranet. A communications audit can
help you tweak your channel mix to match changing employee
preferences and working styles.
